Hundreds take plunge into Lake George

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - Hundreds of people lined the shore of Lake George on New Year's Day preparing to jump into the ice cold water; A strange and funny sight to see so many dressed in bathing suits, and even costumes, in the winter.

There were screams of excitement as hundreds plunged into freezing cold water Tuesday morning. The 35 degree lake gave shock, chills, and all the adrenaline rush one could handle.

For 63-year-old Herman Slater of Copake, the Polar Plunge proves despite health issues he's here another year and able to face the challenge.

"My philosophy is it cleans your soul. Start the New Year out right. Wash away all of the bad year," said Slater.

Slater is a Veteran at the Polar Plunge but first timers came out too, not knowing what to expect, but of course that was the thrill.

"I can't feel my legs or my feet," said Emily Atamanchuck of Queensbury.

"Your toes just go numb," said Hayley Gallagher of Staten Island, who says the plunge is a family tradition.

For others, like 9-year-old Ray Niski, it was about facing a fear.

"Well I didn't want to be a wimp and not do it this year," said Niski.

For many it represents one year washed away by the waves of Lake George allowing a new year and a clean slate.

"It revitalizes and gives you a new start," said Demoree.

The Warren County Sheriff's Office was on stand by as well as life guards. They were not needed after all, no one was injured during this year's Polar Plunge.
