Property owners worried after bullets strike cars and property

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, N.Y. -  Residents in Washington County say a series of shootings onto their personal property could have been a prank, but they say it could have turned dangerous.

On Christmas night, John Pedersen says he saw a suspicious car right out side of his towing business. The next morning as he was getting ready to work he says, "I took my light threw it on the seat of the truck, shut the door and heard the glass crash."

The back of his tow truck is now window-less with shattered glass and in the front of the window shield is one single bullet hole.

"This is a prank, but I could have been in that tow truck, then we wouldn't be having this conversation. It is very dangerous," he said.

Throughout Salem and Jackson, Pedersen says nearly half a dozen property owners discovered the same thing along Rt. 22 and Rexleigh Road. NEWS10 found several bullet holes on one satellite dish planted in the front lawn, recreational vehicles parked a few feet away from another home had two bullet holes, and cars parked in the driveway also now damaged with a bullet hole.

"It is no fun to drive this tow truck, and I am losing money. I'll have to replace the glass," said Pedersen.

Pedersen says not only does he worry about getting in his tow truck at night to do his job but he's also worried because the house he lives in is right across from his business.

"All they had to do was shoot the other way, and they would have shot at my residence," he explained.

New York State Police is investigating the shooting spree.
