TROY, N.Y. – The Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy will
prepare and deliver over 350 hot meals to elderly and shut-in individuals in
Rensselaer County today.
The Christmas Mitzvah/Holiday meals program began 19 years
ago, congregants donate money, food and gift items – and this year price
Chopper donated gift cards and grocery bags to transport the meals while Troy
Senior Center donated rolls and pie.
Joseph's House, Rensselaer County Department of Aging and
troy Senior Center provide the congregation names of individuals that need a
home-cooked meal delivered. Another 90 meals are also provided to Joseph's
House, the Hill Street Inn, and the Lansing Inn.
Volunteers cook the food on Christmas morning, and once the meals
are assembled, volunteers leave the synagogue at around 11:30 a.m. to hand
deliver the meals.
