Sand Lake, N.Y. - A State of Emergency is still in place in Sand Lake. The Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Averill Park Sand Lake Firehouse as this community continues to recover from the storm.
"So we have a number of homes probably half of the community without power," said Town of Sand Lake Supervisor, Flora Fasoldt.
Most of the outages have been caused by large downed trees like those on County Route 66 in Averill Park. On Crystal Lake Road neighbors attempted to clean up the rest of their damage also due to uprooted trees.
"A lot of personal property damage but we have a number of live wires that have been down on our town roads," said Fasoldt.
Utility crews continue working to restore power. Working on Crystal Lake Road proved to be a challenge as they began trimming limbs and untangling wires.
"They've called in a number of out of town crews to help and assist," said Fasoldt.
Michael Manuel woke up to crashing trees Friday morning.
"A large crack like a bomb. We didn't know what it was. We came out. We heard the crash. I came out there was my car," said Manuel.
His car was completely smashed by the tree. Manuel is able to stay at home using a generator but others weren't so lucky. Jadwiga Prochera, 92 , was happy to find a warm place to stay at the shelter.
"No water, no light, no toilet. He has nothing there that I can live with," said Prochera.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter with dry ice, water, food, and a place to sleep.
Supervisor Fasoldt says the majority of power should be restored by 11 p.m. Saturday, but the outer lying areas could take longer.
