CATSKILL, N.Y. - A two-month investigation has found two corrections officers in Greene County allegedly had inappropriate sexual contact with several female inmates while on-duty, Greene County District Attorney Terry Wilhelm announced Thursday.
Investigators with the Greene County Sheriff's Office began looking into the misconduct allegations of 43-year-old Donald Schermerhorn, of Cairo, and 26-year-old Ernest Dunn, of Catskill, two Greene County Corrections Officers. The initial investigation showed misconduct while on-duty and the Sheriff's Office handed the investigation over to an outside agency to assist in the investigation and ensure no conflict of interest.
State Police investigators discovered that Schermerhorn and Dunn had sexual contact with the female inmates. The District Attorney said there was no forcible compulsion involved in any of the crimes, but according to law inmates cannot give valid consent to sexual contact with correction officers.
Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley has terminated Schermerhorn and suspended the employment of Dunn without pay while seeking termination. Seeley says he is "outraged."
"I have zero tolerance for this," said Seeley.
Schermerhorn is charged with three counts of Sexual Abuse 2nd-degree and three counts of Official Misconduct, all misdemeanors. Dunn is charged with felony of Criminal Sexual Act 3rd-degree as well as Sexual Abuse 2nd-degree, Official Misconduct and Coercion 2nd-degree, all misdemeanors.
