Upstate NY citizen-hiring bias case settled

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Justice Department has announced a settlement with R-Tronics LLC, a manufacturer of custom cables in central New York, resolving allegations the company violated federal anti-discrimination law by hiring only U.S. citizens.
The department says its investigation showed the company based in Rome restricted employment to U.S. citizens, though no laws, regulations or contracts required it.
R-Tronics is a federal contractor subject to the International Traffic and Arms Regulations, which doesn't require or permit employers to limit job applicants to American citizens, unless necessary to comply with other requirements.
Under the settlement, the company has agreed to end its citizenship requirement, train its human resources staff about avoiding discrimination and for three years report any revisions in that policy to the department.
