ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany police responded to an apparent shooting on Ontario Street Tuesday morning, which has been officially ruled a homicide.
Police responded to the area of 55 Ontario Street between Second and Third Streets after a call came in for shots fired around 11 a.m. Police say they found one male victim, 23-year-old Iquan Carter of Albany, shot in an alleyway between two homes.
Carter was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
A school, Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy, is located down the street from the crime scene. One woman saying she was concerned after hearing multiple gunshots, especially since her daughter attends the school. "It's too close, especially after Newtown, it really hits home," she said. The school was in lockout mode for about a half-hour.
Police say Carter has been out of prison for exactly three months, after serving six years on a weapons charge.
Police have not released any information on a shooter. The investigation is ongoing.
