Emotional homecoming for National Guard troops

LATHAM, N.Y. - A happy homecoming took place in Latham early Wednesday morning for 20 soldiers with New York's National Guard's 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion.

The soldiers are coming home after spending nearly a year in Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They returned to the New York State Armory in Latham, greeted by family and friends around 3:30 a.m.

It was the morning Monica Gaetano has been waiting months for, to hug Specialist Michael Ellithorpe. "We hadn't talked since high school," she told NEWS10.

It had been 24 years since Monica had seen Michael while attending Gloversville High School, and recently they connected on Facebook.

Specialist Ellithorpe was deployed to Kuwait last January, being home for Christmas is special and even more special to have someone to spend the holidays with.

"I just asked her out," Michael said. And Monica said yes.

"We haven't seen each other in forever, and yet it feels like we've been with each other for a long time," he said.
