COLONIE, N.Y. - For the past four years Kevin Eaton and his girlfriend have proudly displayed a patriotic memorial next to festive Christmas decorations outside their home at 24 Apple Blossom Lane in Colonie.
A donation box sat next to a ceremonial cap and pair of boots worn in by a Cpl. Matthew Covington, a Marine from North Carolina. The items were sent by Covington as a gesture of thanks to Eaton and his girlfriend for their help in supporting members of the Military each winter.
Eaton says the donations are not used to cover the cost of lighting the display, but rather go to an organization which supports members of the military.
But sometime early Sunday morning, Eaton says someone stole the mailbox used to collect the donations. He estimates between $50 and $100 was taken.
Colonie Police are investigating the case. In the meantime, Eaton says he has replaced the mailbox with a more secure locked box.
