SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Jewish Community Center in Schenectady was humming with festive music on Sunday afternoon.
Soft guitar strumming was accompanied by singing voices within a small and brightly colored room, as the event's traditional and contemporary songs, funny parodies, Yiddish folk gems, and sing-alongs ensued.
The Hanukkah Musical Celebration with Cantor Deborah Katchko-Gray was held at the center's 217 Marriott Avenue location.
Deborah Katchko-Gray, a fourth generation cantor and the second to serve at a conservative synagogue, also founded the national organization Women Cantors' Network in 1982.
She teaches hazzanut via Skype for the European Academy of Jewish Liturgy, according to the JCC website.
"Today's event was a way to celebrate Hanukkah, which is a joyous holiday," said Irit Magnes, the Jewish Cultural Director at JCC. "The event let others participate, recognize and honor the holiday."
