ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A contingent of New York Army National Guard soldiers is heading to Virginia to honor the sacrifices of the famous Irish Brigade during the Civil War's Battle of Fredericksburg.

National Guard officials say about 75 members of Manhattan-based Company A, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment are taking part in this weekend's commemoration of the battle's 150th anniversary.

On Sunday, the soldiers will retrace the footsteps of the original 69th Regiment, part of the famed Irish Brigade. The brigade lost more than 1,000 soldiers in a matter of minutes while assaulting the Confederate lines at Fredericksburg on Dec. 13, 1862.

Members of today's 69th Infantry will tour the battlefield and meet up with soldiers from a Virginia Army National Guard unit whose lineage goes back to the Confederates' Stonewall Jackson Brigade.
