CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. - Thousands of students from not just Shenendehowa, but schools throughout the Capital Region, attended the candelight vigil to remember the victims of the accident that killed two Shen seniors and support the recovery of two others.
The vigil Tuesday night, held on Shen's football field, was held to remember Christopher Stewart and Deanna Rivers, both 17, and offer support to Bailey Wind and Matt Hardy who are recovering from the Saturday night car accident on the Northway.
Hardy himself surprised his fellow students by showing up to the vigil to show them his recovery progress.
The vigil showed not only show the strength of this community, but the love and compassion that is truly abundant. It was clear Tuesday night the number of lives Chris and Deanna, Hardy's girlfriend, touched. When Chris's best friend took to the podium, he assured the mourners that all Chris would want was for them to smile and remember the lives they led.
Shenendehowa students chanted "we love Shaker" in a video of a senior assembly posted on the district's Facebook Tuesday afternoon. The normal schools color of green turned to blue, in support of Shaker High School student Bailey Wind, Chris's girlfriend.
The Athletic Director retired the numbers 69 and 19 which belonged to Chris and Deanna from the football and softball teams.
At the end of the vigil their teammates realsed two balloons in their memory as the whole stadium lit up with candles.
