Donated trees make their way into military bases

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – A local family farm is collecting Christmas trees for military members all over the world.

The program started about eight years ago, when a group of tree farmers from the National Christmas Tree Association asked themselves what they could do to show their support for U.S. troops during the holiday season.

Under the suggestion that they get area farms to donate trees and find a willing business to pick them up and deliver them world-wide, Fed-Ex "stepped up to the plate," according to Chip Ellms of ‘Ellms Family Farm.'

Now the program, called ‘Trees for Troops,' delivers donated trees to around 50 military bases all over the world, including many in the United States.

"I'm really amazed," said Chip. "The support for the program grows every year."

One good Samaritan even donated thousands of Christmas lights, so that those who donate a tree to ‘Trees for Troops' can take a box of Christmas lights home with them.

Chip says that many military members have stopped into Ellms Family Farm to recount their fond personal memories after having received a tree while stationed away from home for the holidays.

"This really brings home to where they are," said Chip, smiling.

To donate a tree, or for information on how you can help, call Ellms Family Farm at 884-8168, or visit them at 468 Charlton Road in Ballston Spa.
