Police: Ex-coach allegedly stole funds from Columbia HS sports teams

SCHODACK, N.Y. - State police have arrested a former football coach for Columbia High School they say stole money raised for student sports teams in the East Greenbush School District.

Police say 38-year-old Daniel Hansen, of East Greenbush, had been involved in fund raising efforts for the East Greenbush Sports Boosters Club beginning in May of this year. School district officials recently discovered that money from those fund raising efforts by parents and friends had not been deposited in the proper bank accounts.

Investigators then determined that Hansen altered a check for $3,924.20, intended for the sports teams, so that he could deposit the funds into his own account for personal use.

East Greenbush School Superintendent Angela Nagle says Hansen was a previous coach of baseball and football teams in the district, and most recently an assistant football coach during the 2012 fall season. He is not employed any longer, Nagle says.

Hansen has been charged with Forgery 2nd-degree, a felony, and released, ordered to reappear in the Town of East Greenbush Court at a later date.
