Schenectady school holds ceremony for armed forces

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - A teacher at Brown School in Schenectady was among those honored during a special Friday morning ceremony for the men and women of the armed forces.

Brown School invited the community to attend a ceremony honoring local veterans and those currently enlisted in the armed forces.

The ceremony hit very close to home for Annu Subramanian, a Brown School English teacher, whose son, Darshan, will soon be deployed to Afghanistan.

Darshan is a 1st Lieutenant Pilot in the Air Force.

"I always wanted to be a pilot," said Darshan. "However, after 9/11, and seeing our country in harm's way, I felt it was my responsibility to help out so that future generations, perhaps my own children, can enjoy the privileges that I have enjoyed."

John and Karen McKenna, whose son, John McKenna IV, was killed in the line of duty in Iraq, were also present to pay tribute to those who have served and those who continue to serve.

"At Brown School, we strongly recognize those who serve and protect our freedom," said Head of School, Patti Vitale. "This is an opportunity for us to teach our students about the important role our service men and women play."
