BOSTON (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown has conceded defeat to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, telling boisterous supporters that the challenger has won the election fair and square.
Brown addressed supporters minutes before Warren delivered a victory speech Tuesday night. She thanked the Republican for his service to Massachusetts and promised his supporters to do everything to earn their trust.
Brown told supporters in his concession speech that they stood strong and they continue to stand strong even in disappointment.
Brown did not immediately discuss his plans for the future, saying that "defeat is only temporary."
Warren takes over a seat held for 47 years by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Her election occurred on the 50th anniversary of Kennedy being voted into that office for the first time.
She repeated a promise made by Kennedy then to dedicate his energy to serving Massachusetts voters.
