Sen. Gillibrand wins election for 1st full term

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - With a somber victory speech Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has thanked supporters for electing her to her first full, six-year term.
Gillibrand fended off a challenge from Republican Wendy Long. The Democrat was in the unusual position of facing voters twice in two years after being tapped in 2009 to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton. The following year, she won a special election to fill out the final two years of Clinton's old term.
Gillibrand's speech to supporters Tuesday evening focused on the heavy toll that superstorm Sandy took on New Yorkers, lauding the resilience of those hit hardest by the storm. She said New Yorkers are bound by "something much more powerful than any storm."
Long is a New York City lawyer who was making her first run for public office.
