Posted:

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. - Below is a collection of Governor Cuomo's safety tip "tweets" for those in areas that are still being affected by Hurricane Sandy, especially those who are still experiencing gas and power outages.

  • If you re-enter your home and hear the carbon monoxide detector or alarm going off, get out of building and call 911.
  • Post-Sandy, please be aware of the dangers of hypothermia; information for you and your family in order to prevent and recognize symptoms is available at: http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/winter/guide.asp
  • New Yorkers in need of shelter, call 1-800-733-2767 or text SHELTER & your zip code to 43362.
  • When cleaning up your home or around your home post-Sandy, wear protective clothing, rubber boots and gloves to protect yourself against sewage-bred bacteria and viruses.
  • If you're experiencing stress, depression and anxiety post-Sandy, visit: http://disasterdistress.samhsa.gov or text "TalkWithUs" to 66746, or call 1-800-846-8517.
  • Register as soon as possible for FEMA assistance by calling 800-621-3362 or visiting http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
  • Please check on your family and neighbors in the mornings. Cold weather can be dangerous in a post-disaster setting.
  • Remember to check the batteries on your smoke detectors & carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Click here http://rdcrss.org/QecWAy to find a Red Cross shelter near you and here http://on.nyc.gov/R2NQlf for warming centers nearby in New York City.
  • Candles are unsafe and ineffective as a heat source. Never leave candles lit in an unattended room or when going to sleep.
  • Never use grills as an indoor heating source. Charcoal and propane emit carbon monoxide gas and are not suitable for indoor use.
  • Do not use a stove or oven as a heat source. Open oven doors or lit stove burners can be dangerous and are ineffective as a heat source.
  • If your home oil furnace been damaged by the storm, call the New York State Spill hotline at 1-800-457-7362 to report oil or chemical spills.
