Albany, N.Y. - With just a few days left until election night, candidates are busy making their last rounds. NEWS 10 caught up with Republican incumbent Chris Gibson and Democratic challenger Julian Schreibman on Saturday. The two candidates are vying for the 19th Congressional District seat in what is now a close race.
A Siena Poll released Friday showed Gibson with a five point lead over Schreibman. Gibson says his campaigns goal over the past two weeks has been to knock on 100,000 doors.
"We had hundreds of volunteers out today all throughout the district and we're making significant progress," said Gibson.
His supporters believe he is the clear choice and they're ready to show their allegiance at the polls.
"I think he's for the middle class people. I would have to say he's the man for the job," said a Gibson supporter.
"I'm concerned about social security and medicare down the road. I fairly believe that he could probably do a good job at maintaining those," said Paul Dipaola of Kinderhook.
Schreibman says he feels his campaign has the momentum to win.
"We're focused today on getting ready for those final hours. The last couple of days making sure we are prepped to get all our supporters at the poll on Tuesday," said Schreibman.
Schreibman supporters explained why they believe he is the right person for the job.
"He's very direct and sincere. He is pro choice which made me very happy," said Lee Jamison of Stuyvesant.
"He's got consistency. I think his position on issues are solid and I like that," said Mathew Locricchio of Stuyvesant.
There was one thing many voters seemed to agree on Saturday, the candidates ad campaigns did not help them make their decision.
"I actually sort of disregarded them," said Dipaola.
"I think that gets in the way of hearing what the message is," said Cindy Novak of Kinderhook.
Both candidates are confident that their message will ring through on Tuesday.
"I'm the only candidate with a proven record and a plan to create jobs," said Gibson.
"The response we've been getting about talking about standing up for middle class families has gotten a great response, that's why it's going very quickly in our direction," said Schreibman.
