Couple recalls Hoboken flooding that forced them to evacuate

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - Lauren Pavlick and her boyfriend Matt Soriano say it took only minutes for the water rushing over Willow Street in Hoboken to rise 3 feet.

Pavlick took several photos from their window and stoop, including one of two people making their way down the street on a yellow raft.

Without electricity, they say they were forced to live a very simple existence, eating whatever they had inside their apartment.

Neighbors relied on fellow neighbors, the couple recalls sharing a chili dinner cooked on an upstairs neighbors grill - and when power began to return, how strangers shared what they could.

Thursday, with the water receding Pavlick and Soriano were able to walk from their apartment to her father's waiting car after he had driven down from the Capital Region.

When they returned to her family home in East Greenbush, it was the first time they were able to see Sandy's destruction on television, witnessing the true power of the storm.
