BENNINGTON, VT - At approximately noon on November 2nd, the Bennington Police were contacted by authorities at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School and notified that a teacher had located a live rifle cartridge within one of the classrooms.
Every class was secured and the school was immediately put into lock-down.
The Police were requested and responded to the scene, where seven officers searched every corner of the school, including each locker.
The process took around 3 ½ hours.
No other piece of ammunition and no guns were located.
After the school was determined 'secure' by Police, the children were relocated to either the gym or the cafeteria, where they were each given a letter explaining the situation, to give forward to their parents.
The children were all allowed to take their normal course of return back home, including buses or walking.
The Chief of Bennington Police is "confident that the live cartridge's presence in the school was a mistake."
He also mentioned that it is currently hunting season in Vermont, and that tomorrow begins youth weekend at the ranges.
Investigation into the origin of the cartridge is ongoing.
