Restaurant owners rebuilding along the Hudson after Sandy

Posted:

CATSKILL, N.Y.- The Capital Region did not escape Sandy's wrath, as small business owners along the Hudson River slowly rebuild from flood damage.

One restaurant had to end their season early because of Sandy.

The Guido family considers their restaurant, Port of Call, a second home. Frank Guido spends seven days a week looking after the restaurant, and says everything inside is brand new because of the wreck Irene left.

Then again, high tide kicked in Monday night, and brought nearly four-feet of water in from the Hudson River into the restaurant in a half-hour.

The fans and dryers have replaced the tables and chairs to prevent mold and mildew.

But Guido's biggest worry is his employees. For first time since opening in 1999, he was planning to keep the restaurant open through the holidays.

"I was so happy to keep 25 people working," he said. And now Guido says that cannot happen anymore.

Marc Yanni's restaurant is along the Hudson River also, located in Coeyemans.

He was determined to come back and in four days with the help of his customers they took action. "We had five power washer going. We were scrubbing and cleaning," said Kevin McDermott, who pitched in with the clean up efforts.

They reopened Thursday night, one day ahead of schedule.

Both restaurant owners say their in the same boat, with thousands of dollars in damages from Sandy and a big cleanup bill ahead of them.

"I'm almost at a loss for words on where to start," said Guido.

Guido says he hopes to open Port of Call in mid-April. He's also helping some employees shift to positions in his other restaurant, but may not have room for every employee.
