Residents demand answers during Stockport budget meeting

Posted:

STOCKPORT, N.Y. – The Stockport town supervisor couldn't get through the towns tentative budget for 2013 without residents interrupting – fired up and looking for answers about how the town spent a quarter million dollars it didn't have - leaving taxpayers to foot the bill.

Supervisor Matt Murrell, who took office back in January, says the board realized the money was unaccounted for only after the board hired a private accounting firm to analyze its books. Murrell also called in the state comptroller's office, and they are conducting a separate audit.

But many residents are left outraged.

Still, Stockport can't wait; the board has to pass its 2013 budget by November 20th to stay afloat.

They're proposing raising taxes by nearly two percent along with water rates and cutting funds to its police department.
