GHENT, N.Y. - The TCI Inc. Recycling Plant has put in an application to
receive a permit to build a new Falls Industrial
Park facility at the site of its old facility, destroyed on
August 1st by a chemical explosion.
Ghent Town Attorney Theodore Guterman says
the town is taking every precaution to ensure the site is safe to rebuild
upon.
"There are several steps that have to be passed before a permit
can be issued. TCI has only put in an application for permit. This is the
preliminary stage. The process of securing a permit to build takes months."
Nearby residents, still reeling from the explosion - which sent
soot and debris flying four stories into the air - say they are skeptical TCI Inc.
has neighbors' best interest at heart.
"It's all about the bottom line. They want to build for the least
amount of money possible, and don't care about us residents living nearby," says
Thomas Messina, who lives just up the road from TCI Inc.
Plant officials want to build a $3 million, 30,000 square foot structure at
the site. Guterman says neighbors will be able to have their say at public
meetings, which will be held in the event TCI's application to receive a permit
is approved.
