GUILDERLAND, N.Y. - Officials were called to the Watervliet Reservoir Wednesday morning, after a worker suffered what appears to be a fatal medical emergency.
Around 11:25 a.m., crews from the Fort Hunter Fire Department, Guilderland Center Fire
Department and Slingerlands Fire Department were called to assist in the water rescue.
Responders determined the victim, whose name has not been released at this time, had not fallen into the water, rather was part of a work crew performing maintenance
on the dam structure at the top and middle of a waterfall.
Once rescuers
reached the worker on the dam, attempts were made to revive the individual but
were unsuccessful.
The rescuers began to plan to the removal of
the individual from the dam, however the nature of the dam's internal stairs and
walkways prevented rescuers made for a difficult job. They were also unable to deploy rescue boats due to the location of
the reservoir's waterfall.
Fire department and police personnel needed to use a system
of ropes to send and retrieve a rescue basket carrying the
individual and were able to remove the victim from the reservoir.
