Local Air National Guard troops heading to NYC

Latham, N.Y. - The Air National Guard is sending Humvees down to New York City Tuesday afternoon to help with storm recovery.

A 20 member team of troops from the Air National Guard came to the Latham National Guard base to prepare vehicles and head to NYC.

The troops tell NEWS10 they do not know exactly what they will be doing, but are ready to respond in any way needed.

It is 1st Class Airman Angela Harrington's first time responding to a natural disaster.

"We have to have each others backs and be conscious of each other. I think that we're all ready to do that," said Harrington.

Harrington prepared her humvee with anticipation of what's to come in the next few hours.

"We've been told about really bad roads so we're expecting that. Bumpy ride but we'll get through it," said Harrington.

Although nothing can really prepare her for the emotional roller coaster she is about to face.

"I'm sure a lot of sadness and things like that but just try to be uplifting to everyone. Stay positive," said Harrington.

Harrington can find some comfort and leadership from Sgt. Roger Yurko. He's been in the service for 10 years and responded to Hurricane Katrina.

"I can't wait to go out there. We've been waiting for so long, ever since last night they called us up. So we've all been excited, ready to go," said Sgt. Yurko.

Yurko says he has an idea of what to expect.

"Doing sand bags, helping out other people. If we need to build stuff we can build stuff for them," said Sgt. Yurko.

He says patience is key.

"They'll tell you to do one thing, next you know nope move to another thing. You just have to be patient about it and do what we got to do and what we're told to do," said Sgt. Yurko.

The troops are now at Camp Smith, just outside of NYC waiting for orders.
