ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The state Department of Environmental Conservation is telling hikers, campers and hunters to get out of the woods before the massive storm hits.
The notice was issued in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy bringing strong winds and heavy rain. Officials said people shouldn't return to the woods until after DEC has had a chance to assess the damage from the storm, such as toppled trees, mudslides and trail washouts.
Officials also closed the Fish Creek campground near Saranac Lake and canceled all reservations for next week.
Trail crews were busy all summer repairing trails and backcountry bridges damaged by Tropical Storm Irene last fall. That storm caused extensive flooding damage in the Adirondacks and Catskills.
