ALBANY, N.Y. - The 2012 Albany Tulip Queen and Tulip Court members joined the Albany City gardener in planting tulip bulbs in Washington Park Saturday.
The event, held in commemoration of the 65th Annual Albany Tulip Festival, allowed the Queen and Court to design their own tulip bed by handpicking flower varieties and colors under the guidance of the city gardener.
In preparation for the 2013 Albany Tulip Festival, Albany City Gardener Jessica Morgan's gardening crew will plant nearly 200,000 spring bulbs throughout the city, including 141,150 tulips in 173 different varieties.
Morgan's small staff spends 44 days between mid-October and mid-December planting. The crew of 3 full-time and 7 seasonal employees plants roughly 4,500 bulbs per day to stay on schedule.
The 65th Annual Albany Tulip Festival will take place on May 11 & 12, 2013 in Albany's historic Washington Park. For more information on the Tulip Festival, visit www.albanyevents.org or call 434-2032. For more information on the Albany Tulip Queen & Court, visit www.albanytulipqueen.com.
