STILLWATER, N.Y. - The Stillwater Police Department is encouraging members of their community to donate any used cell phones for victims of domestic violence.
The police department started collecting old phones for victims of domestic violence back in 2003, and since then, they have collected nearly 5,000 phones.
"I started as a police officer 20 years ago in Stillwater. I was arresting adults for abusing their partners. 20 years later I am arresting their children for doing the same thing. Unacceptable. It's got to stop," said Sgt. Ray Cordani.
He said these cell phones can often be lifelines for women trying to leave a violent relationship.
