ROTTERDAM JUNCTION, NY. – More than a year has passed since Tropical Storm Irene hit Rotterdam Junction, now the community is preparing for the next big storm, Hurricane Sandy.
Down the street from the newly renovated Fire House, the Flood Recovery Coalition of Schenectady County, a group of mostly volunteers are working to put a home back together for one of their residents.
Nathan Mansager is the Coordinator. "The owner is an elderly woman, she's in her early 90's and she's been in this house foru about 40 years," Mansager said. This is one of the nine homes they still need to finish.
Mansager along with volunteers like Norm Torres from Rotterdam Junction have been working on homes since Irene hit more than a year ago.
"Nature is unpredictable. Sometimes you can figure people out, but you can't figure out mother nature figure that out," Torres said.
With Hurricane Sandy traveling up the coast. The men say they have faith their community will hold strong.
"At first I was a little worried when I first saw the newscast last night, but at the same time, what I've seen in the past 14 months is a community that's resilient and strong and is not going to run in fear," Mansager said.
"We're not worried other storms and everything else any more. We already got beat up. So it's not going to hurt us and these houses are really well fastened down now so that storms going to have problems moving us out of here," Torres said.
