ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany woman whose 4-year-old daughter died after a fire tore through their Benson Street home last week appeared in court Friday to answer to charges of neglect.
Marasia Vanness is being charged with neglect because of the circumstances of the fire that claimed her daughter's life and led her other four children to be taken away from her this week by the Department of Social Services.
Officials discovered the fire started because the stove burners were left on as she took a nap in another room. The 4-year-old lit an incense, which then sparked the fire while her mother slept.
If Vanness' case goes to hearing, she has the chance to get her other children back.
