GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The Tri-County United Way and National Grid wants residents to take advantage of the many utility assistance programs offered to people who may struggle to pay their gas bills during winter months.
At a press conference Monday, officials from both organizations stressed the importance of programs like HEAP (Heat and Energy Assistance Program), which provides a grant to people who need help with heating costs. Officials say it is also important to plan ahead for the costs that come with winter heating.
"This is the time of year when costs go up, heating your home and keeping your lights on is of the utmost importance, especially for our more vulnerable groups, like seniors living alone. Taking as many financial precautions before it gets too cold outside will be very helpful in the end," says Hollie Rapp, Director of Assistance Programs for Washington County DSS.
Rapp says there are limitations to assistance programs and residents should be aware that the initial application date for HEAP is November 19th.
