TROY, N.Y. - Mass at the Sacred Heart School in Troy Monday focused on Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
The church is decorated in honor of the first Native American Saint with symbols and pictures of Kateri and students sang hymns in celebration of Sunday's canonization.
The blessed Kateri was one of seven new Saints named Sunday at the Vatican and one of two who hail from upstate New York.
Sacred Heart students have been learning about Kateri in class. Each grade made a special symbol such as head dresses, necklaces, and bracelets.
"At least in my lifetime there has not been a Saint inducted into Sainthood or canonized, and so the kids got a good opportunity as well as learning about the new Saint," said Devon Camega, a sixth-grade teacher.
The students are among hundreds of faithful celebrating Saint Kateri.
Bishop Hubbard and the group who traveled to the Vatican for the canonization are scheduled to return home to Albany Tuesday.
