Canonization of two U.S. Saints, one is first ever Native American Saint

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Capital Region celebrates the canonization of two U.S. Saints on Sunday.

Kateri Tekakwitha, a Mohawk Indian who spent most of her life in what is now upstate New York, has become the first ever Native American Saint.

Mother Marianne Cope, who also began religious life in upstate New York, subsequently moving to Hawaii to care for leprosy patients, was also canonized Sunday morning.

Among the celebrations were the following masses:

- 10:00 a.m. mass at the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish on Union Street in Schenectady

- 10:00 a.m. mass at the National Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine in Fonda

- 2:00 p.m. mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville

Hundreds were expected at each celebratory mass.
