ALBANY, N.Y. - The Albany Police Department says a man has been arrested for stealing a woman's purse after contacting her with a stolen cell phone.
Albany Police Spokesperson Steve Smith says 20-year-old Clinton Avent, of 201 Kent Street in Albany, was arrested Thursday following an investigation by officers.
Smith says on Sunday, October 7th, Avent used a stolen cell phone in order to have the robbery victim meet him on Lincoln Avenue. Passing himself off as the actual owner of the phone, Avent texted allegedly the victim who was in the phone's contacts and arranged the meeting.
Around 5 p.m., the victim arrived on Lincoln Avenue to meet who she believed was the owner of the phone. At that time, Smith says Avent and another suspect stole the victim's purse while displaying what appeared to be a black colored handgun.
The victim was also struck in the head with the handgun during the incident.
Avent was arrested and charged with Robbery 1st-degree and two counts of Robbery 2nd-degree. He has been remanded to Albany County Jail.
Smith says the incident still remains under investigation as police continue to search for the second suspect involved.
