BENNINGTON, Vt. - Bennington Police say they responded to a two-car accident Thursday morning which killed one elderly woman.
The accident happened on Route 7-A near Transport Drive around 11:20 a.m., police say. While responding to the scene it was reported that the car involved had begun to
catch fire but was extinguished by a passing motorist. Upon police arrival
there was one male driver lying on a lawn and a female with serious injuries
trapped inside a car.
A preliminary
investigation revealed that a 1999 Honda Civic car, driven by 86-year-old Ruth
Cherbonneau, of Arlington, VT, heading southbound began to veer into the northbound lane as a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by 69-year-old Edward Legacy, of Shaftsbury, VT was heading northbound.
Police say Legacy attempted to avoid the collision by swerving off the road and into a drainage ditch, however Cherbonneau's vehicle struck the left front of Legacy's truck.
Police say Legacy was able to exit his truck and laid on the lawn until attended to by police and EMS, however Cherbonneau was trapped inside her vehicle and was unresponsive. Numerous life saving measures were attempted while the fire department began to
extricate her from the vehicle, however she was pronounced dead.
