SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A Schenectady man and known "pimp" could be sentenced to life in prison Thursday for being a persistent felon after repeated convictions of promoting the prostitution of teenagers.
On April 4, 2012, a jury found 57-year-old Bruce E Carey guilty of promoting prostitution 2nd-degree, Rape 3rd-degree and Criminal Sex Act in the 3rd-degree.
Thursday afternoon, Judge Polly Hoye will decide whether to sentence Carey on those charges or whether he should be sentenced as a persistent felon; this being the third guilty verdict he has received in the past 29 years.
Assistant District Attorney Jessica Lorusso is prosecuting the case. She tells NEWS10 in 2010 Carey lured a 15-year–old girl away from a New York City psychiatric facility to his apartment in Schenectady where he raped her and forced her to prostitute. Carey was arrested on January 19, 2011 for that crime.
Carey was also convicted in 1983, when he was sentenced to prison for promoting prostitution in second- and third-degree after authorities say he took advantage of 15- and 16-year-old girls.
He then got out of prison in 1991 and shortly after his release was arrested and convicted for felony drug charges after police found him in possession of cocaine, Lorusso said.
Attorney Cheryl Coleman is defending Carey on Thursday. Closing arguments in his sentencing hearing will begin at 2:00 p.m.
