MENANDS, N.Y. – Just after 11:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12th, Menands Fire Department responded to a call for a structure fire with possible chemical involvement at Gerome Technologies, located at 85 Broadway.
Gerome Technologies is a manufacturing company that fabricates insulation components for power generating systems.
According to Menands Fire Department, an oven that was exposed to chemicals during the manufacturing processes experienced a negative reaction and caused an explosion within the factory.
There were three people inside of the building at the time of the explosion.
All three were located at a far side of the building, and because of their distant proximity, did not sustain injuries.
West Albany's Hazardous Material response team entered the building, and deemed it safe for investigation that night.
According to Menands Fire Department, if there a fire was caused by the explosion, it "burned itself out," requiring no extinguishing.
The building sustained extensive damage.
The factory has been undergoing clean-up from the chemical explosion all weekend.
