NASSAU, N.Y. – Local and community representatives will gather Sunday to celebrate the naming of the Route 20 Bridge in the Town of Nassau in honor of Staff Sergeant Derek Farley.
Farley, 24, an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Technician, was killed Aug. 14, 2012 in Bala Boluk, Farah, Afghanistan when a roadside bomb he was attempting to disarm detonated, according to the Department of Defense.
He was just two weeks away from finishing what would have been his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.
The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at the First Niagara Bank branch at Route 20 and McClellan Drive near the bridge, now known as the Staff Sergeant Derek Farley Memorial Bridge.
