Food, dogs and plenty of fun at UAlbany’s Fallbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany opened its metaphorical doors Saturday to welcome its surrounding community during Fallbany, the fifth annual fall festival at the school.

The day kicked off with the Alumni Association's 5K Run/2.5K Walk and Little Dane Dash to benefit the University at Albany Cancer Research Center's Fund for Memory and Hope.

Other events included a book fair and an author signing featuring Randy Cohen, former New York Times "The Ethicist" columnist and "Late Night with David Letterman" writer.

And although it seemed a bit out of place at a college, sheep and the collies that herd them were on hand as UAlbany Biological Sciences Professor Gary Kleppel demonstrated how he developed a new way to control invasive plants without using herbicides or heavy equipment.

Visitors also got the chance to fill their stomachs for a great cause with a farmer's market that included fresh produce and craft items from local vendors, with all of the proceeds benefiting the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

But by far the most popular attraction was the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue tent where visitors could stop to meet with a few of the furry giants.
