LATHAM, NY -- Temperatures will drop to the twenties Friday night in the Capitol Region and gardeners are preparing for the first freeze.
They are the toughest plants to survive the long cold months ahead. That's why gardeners are preparing for the first frost of the season with mums. "Your channel just said it was going to be in the twenties and that's going to be cold," said John Thommasini, who owns a nursery.
George Vogt of George's Market and Nursery added, "It's part of nature and it happens every year. Most people want to put in mum and have color through Thanksgiving."
Vogt's says he points to frost hardy pansies when his customers come to him looking for plants in the fall. He said, "You plant them now, they'll flower right along. When it gets really cold they'll yellow out."
Vogt also recommends buying darker colored mums to last in colder temperatures. Though most petunias and marigolds with wither away, now is the time to plant your bulbs.
"Clear your beds, put in your daffodils," said Vogt.
