TROY, N.Y. – The Troy Public Library's complete collection of the historic Troy Sentinel is now preserved in high quality digital format.
Gramercy Communications provided a grant to the Troy Public Library in July for the project. The grant was inspired by the firm's recent relocation to the building formerly occupied by the Troy Sentinel newspaper at 225 River Street, between 1823 and 1832.
As "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" was published in the building during this time, a commemorating plaque rests on the outside wall.
Later attributed to Clement Clark Moore, "'Twas the Night before Christmas" was first published on December 23, 1823 in the pages of this newspaper anonymously. The library's copy of the poem is one of four worldwide in existence in its original form, now publicly on display at the library in both its physical and digital form.
"This has been a fantastic initiative to preserve our proud history and develop an important resource and educational tool," said Mayor Lou Rosamilia. "This collaborative effort is significant for the Troy Public Library, the City's residents and visitors, and the entire community who now have access to the Troy Sentinel in a convenient digital form."
The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 also occurred during the midst of the Troy Sentinel's publication period. Today the building continues to tie in the connection as it rests on the banks of the Hudson River in downtown Troy.
"We saw an opportunity and wanted to give back after realizing the historical aspects of our new office building's location and its importance to the community," said Tom Nardacci, President and Founder of Gramercy Communications. "We are proud to have been a part of this project as this historic publication will now be preserved for future generations."
