COHOES, N.Y. - According to residents
at a Cohoes Housing Authority, they have become over run with wild cats that continue
to have kittens and the problem has become too much to handle.
Dozens of wild cats have been calling the Cohoes Housing Authority
home, residents saying the feline problem has grown over the past few
months.
One resident says he had to take his child to the emergency room after one cat scratched his hand. He also says going to the dumpster at night has also proved to be a
challenge.
"When you throw the garbage, the cats, three or four of them, jump on you
from the dumpster," the resident explains.
Most wild cats
are often left to fend for themselves. Many according to the Capital District
Human Society die of starvation, disease, or in the winter from the
cold.
Residents also say the cats continue to have babies. "They
give birth to the babies everywhere you see, it's an issue."
Management at the Manor Sites Apartments says they have been working on the issue
for months with no solution in sight.
"It's
not an easy problem to solve. Everyone of them would require some kind of
spaying or neutering to be able to control it, which means trapping, which means
bringing them up and somebody is paying for it, around $200
each," Charles Patricelli says.
The Cohoes Housing Authority is looking for help from anyone who could
solve this problem.
The Capital District Humane Society says the largest challenge is trying to
catch these cats.
