HALFMOON, NY. - For the first time in months the firefighters who helped save the lives fo the 50 plus people living in the Bishop Hubbard Apartments are coming together.
Trudy Romano and Teresa Delgaudio say they remember that night well.
"At 4:15 a.m. everybody had to get out. at that time they knocked on the doors," Romano said.
"And with a key, and I go what are you doing here, two men!" Delgaudio exclaimed.
"We had to go out the way we looked, right out of bed," Romano said.
And, it wasn't just that their building was on fire. Once the firefighters managed to evacuate all of the elderly from the building they had to go back inside to get their medication.
They took our names, what kind of medicines we had, where our rooms are and all that stuff. The firemen I got to tell ya they were very helpful," Romano said.
During the meeting Halfmoon Town Supervisor Mindy Wormuth took an opportunity to thank the Department's for working together to help the seniors and to make a proclamation making the month of March as October Fire Prevention Awareness Month.
"Our community would not be the same place it is with out all of you. So we want to thank you," Mormuth said.
And a representative from the Apartments shyly walked up to give the firefighters a small token of their appreciation, a crystal helmet.
"We greatly appreciate it, but we do it because we want to give back to the community," Halfmoon Firefighter John D'Alessandro said.
