Poll shows tight fight for open NY Senate seats

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The first poll of the New York state Senate races shows just how close the fight for the power and perks of majority control will be in November.

The Siena College poll finds Republicans have an edge in keeping a Monroe County seat that's open because Sen. James Alesi is retiring.

The poll also finds Democrat George Latimer narrowly leading Republican Bob Cohen for the Westchester County seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer.

Republicans have a 33-29 majority.

The poll released Wednesday questioned 438 likely voters in the 37th Senate District in the Rochester area. It has a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points. Another 446 likely voters were questioned in the 55th District centered in Westchester. That survey has a margin of error of 4.7 points.
