Broadway in Saratoga Springs
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The American Planning
Association has announced Broadway as one of 10
Great Streets for 2012 under the Great Places in America
program.
The APA looks at exceptional character, the role of planning in adding value to the community, as well as fostering economic growth when deciding "great streets." They also look to find many of the features Americans say are important to
their "ideal community" including locally owned businesses, transit, neighborhood
parks, and sidewalks.
The organization specifically looked at Broadway between Van Dam and East Congress Streets for its 19th-century architecture, building
façade improvements, compatible new construction, revitalization efforts, and
diversity of uses.
The nine blocks of this broad, tree-lined street – formerly
home to some two dozen vacant store fronts – host a variety of municipal,
institutional, commercial, cultural and residential structures.
