BALLSTON, N.Y. - State Police in Saratoga are investigating an accident in which the family's minivan rolled backwards out of a driveway, tragically killing an 11-year-old child.
The accident occurred at the family's home on Blue Barns Road in the Town of Ballston around 3:19 p.m. Monday, killing 11-year-old Lane Rowe.
Police say there were only three young passengers in the 2008 Dodge Caravan at the time of the accident, Lane's siblings: 12-year-old Luca, and his 4 and 2-year-old brothers.
Lane's mother tells NEWS10 she wants her son to be remembered as a hero for saving his young siblings.
Lane's 12-year-old sister agreed. "He saved us and he's our hero," Luca said.
Luca says the accident is still a blur. "Lane came outside and he couldn't open the back door to get in." That is when the van suddenly started rolling.
The investigation revealed that the van was parked on an inclined driveway when it began to roll backwards.
Lane, a sixth-grade student at O'Rourke Middle School, was attempting to stop the vehicle from entering the roadway by getting behind the vehicle to stop it, and was pushed to the ground.
The vehicle rolled into the northbound shoulder of Blue Barns Road, where the vehicle came to rest on Lane.
The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District where Lane attended issued the following statement:
The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school district is deeply saddened by the death of an O'Rourke Middle School student on the afternoon of Monday, October 1, in an automobile accident.
The Middle School crisis team of administrators, counselors, psychologists and teachers has been activated and will be helping students talk and share their feelings as they work through this difficult time.
Lane just celebrated his 11th birthday on September 12th. He was born the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks; his grandmother said he made people smile during such a difficult time. She says she will aleays smile now remembering his beautiful personality.
The O'Rourke Middle School has set up a fund for the Rowe family. Contributions can be made to "The Lane Rowe
Memorial Fund" in care of the Ballston Spa National Bank. Contributions
can be dropped off in person at any branch of the Ballston Spa National Bank or
mailed to the bank at PO Box
70, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. Checks should be made out to the
Lane Rowe Memorial Fund.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
