ALBANY, N.Y. - National Grid tells NEWS10 $76 million will be spent on
maintenance on the underground network as part of a five-year plan.
There is
currently a $1.6 million project in Albany wrapping up right now. Inspections on
the underground network are performed on a regular basis. Manholes are
inspected every five years and underneath each manhole is inspected annually.
National Grid says the recent manhole incidents in Albany and Troy were completely unrelated to each other.
The
first incident in Albany involved a multi-cable network; one
smoldering cable from a network came in contact with another cable from a
different network that caused the explosion. The second incident in Albany was what they call
a ‘cable failure' and that involved a single-cable network. The same is true for
the Troy incident.
Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings and National Grid will be meeting Monday to discuss the underground work.
