ALBANY, NY -- Governor Andrew Cuomo briefly touched on the topic of reorganizing New York Racing Association at the Capitol on Monday.
Not much is being said yet, but Cuomo confirmed some information about what's next for New York Racing Association, saying "We are looking at a number of ways to reform NYRA."
The governor confirmed reports the state is looking to step in and fix the organization. Howard Glaser, New York's Director of State Operations added, "NYRA wasn't functioning properly."
NYRA has been plagued with scandal, including revelations it cheated bettors out of $8.5 million in winnings, that lead to the firing of NYRA's top officials weeks before the Saratoga racing season. NYRA appointed two new leaders, but prior to the meet, Governor Cuomo promised change. Glasser explained, "The operating of NYRA can be done in a variety of ways."
Now the state is looking into privatizing the organization, all while keeping taxpayers and tourists in mind to give them the best experience at the track.
Cuomo adding, "We'll look at how you incorporate entertainment. That is a big part of this and something we will work through."
A formal announcement is expected from the governor about NYRA later this week.
