SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Schenectady Fire Department says an 86-year-old man died in a fire that broke out at a two-story home on Helderberg Avenue early Saturday morning.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Gillespie says an investigation revealed the fire was accidental and probably caused by a pipe the tenant was smoking.

The fire occurred at 1082 Helderberg Avenue around 6:50 a.m. The body of the victim that lived on the first floor of the home was found after fire crews were able to get the flames under control.

The victim's name has not been released.

When the Schenectady Fire Department arrived on scene, there was heavy smoke and visible fire. Crews attempted to rescue the man, but were unable to reach the occupant in time.
